This month's Spotlight is
Reading-Berks Guild of Craftsman |
 |
The Reading-Berks Guild of Craftsman was
established as a non-profit organization in 1945 and is the largest
chapter in the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsman. Our Purposes are:
-
To promote and protect the interests of the craftsman
-
To encourage the study and practice of handcrafts
-
To uphold the best of traditional and contemporary
crafts
-
To maintain standards of excellence in design and
technique
A high level of quality is maintained by having a jury
process, and many of our members are nationally recognized artisans in
their field. We support a broad range of activities. Monthly meetings are
held (except July and August) with a program of special interest and a
monthly newsletter is published. Currently we produce two shows a year,
the Spring show at Kutztown University and the holiday craft show in
November at Penn State Berks Campus. We also produce the award winning
monthly TV show “Your Berks Craftsmen” on BCTV. A student awards program
is held annually, with monetary awards for Berks County high school
seniors, and we disburse annual grants to our members for educational use.
We sponsor an annual award for the best traditional work at Franklin and
Marshall College, and donate yearly to BCTV and Penn State scholarship
fund. Currently a log cabin at the PA German Heritage Center of Kutztown
University is being purchased. We are also a social group, hosting a
summer picnic and Christmas dinner. These things are accomplished by
volunteers who believe in our purposes. Benefits to volunteers include:
- FREE attendance to our Spring Show and Holiday Shows
